
September 19, 1991 - William Golding is born in, Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England to his parents Mildred and Alex Golding. His mother was a an active suffragette, who faught strongly for women's rights. His father was a Schoolmaster.

William went to Marlborough Royal Free Grammer School for his early education. His father was the Schoolmaster there at the time he attended.

After primary school, William went to Brasenose College at Oxford University. He studied English Literature although his father had hopes of him becoming a scientist. A year before he graduated he wrote a book of poems and named the book "Poems" this book was overlooked by many and not a success.

William began teaching English and Philosophy at Bishop Wordsworth’s School in Salisbury. Teaching unruly boys at this school gave him inspiration for the book Lord of the Flies.

William became a Lieutenant while serving 6 years in the Royal Navy fighting in WWII. Golding has said, “I began to see what people were capable of doing. Anyone who moved through those years without understanding that man produces evil as a bee produces honey, must have been blind or wrong in the head.” Many of the things he saw over in WWII also helped him in writing his famous book Lord of the Flies.

In 1954 William Golding's " Lord of the Flies" is published, this was after being rejected 21 times. The book tells so much about the struggle between good and evil. His many years of teaching and his 6 years in the war helped him to write this book.

William Golding dies of a heart attack in Perranarworthal, Cornwall. William left behind his wife Ann Brookfield, and two children, David and Judith. After Mr. Golding's death, his finished manuscript of The Double Tongue. was published posthumously.
