    Benjamin Mays
    Benjamin Mays was a preacher and educator. He fought for civil rights and was a big influence on Martin Luther King Jr when he was a student. He was the president of Morehouse College from 1940 to 1967.
  • Herman Talmadge

    Herman Talmadge
    He was part of the Three Governor Controversy in 1947. In 1948 he won a special election for Governor. He started the state sales tax and brought industry to Georgia. He was also very racist and was against integration.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Legal Document The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that segregation in schools was illegal. Separate but equal schools was not ok which overturned the decision in Plessy v. Ferguson.

    In 1956 GA's state flag was changed to the Confederate Battle flag. John Sammons Bell introduced the bill in the legislature because of his interest in Confederate history. People were upset about integration so the bill passed because Georgia politicians wanted to show resistance to the idea of integration.

    SNCC History The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee was led by chairman John Lewis. The group's main goal was integration. They tried to make this happen through nonviolent protests like the Freedom Rides. The group was for younger people who wanted to be a part of the Civil Rights movement.

    March Videos More than 200,000 people went to Washington DC for a political rally organized by civil rights groups. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his " I Have a Dream" speech.
  • Andrew Young

    Andrew Young
    He was an aide to MLK, Jr. and the first African American elected to the US house of Representative since Reconstruction. He was a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during the Civil Rights movement. He later became the US Ambassador to the United Nations and then Mayor of Atlanta.

    Transcript Ended segregation in all public places. It was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson. It was the most important civil rights legislation since Reconstruction.
  • Martin Luther King, Jr.

    Martin Luther King, Jr.
    MLK Speeches He was a minister from Atlanta who believed in non-violent means of protesting. He was one of the most important people in the Civil Rights Movement. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott and was one of the founders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In March of 1965 he organized the Selma to Montgomery marches to protest voter issues for African Americans. He was assassinated in 1968.
  • Maynard Jackson

    Maynard Jackson
    First African American Mayor of Atlanta. He started affirmative action programs in Atlanta and helped make the airport one of the biggest in the world. The airport was renamed for him after he died in 2003.
