    Invasion of China
    a. Also known as the Second Sino-Japanese War
    c. Happened when China began resisting the expansion of Japanese influence in its territory
    d. Wanting to unseat the Nationalist government in China, Japan took over large areas in eastern China
    e. There was then a stalemate (neither side wins) and Japan's forces were divided and went to Southeast Asia
    f. Japan's were defeated by the Allies in 1945 which ended its occupation of China
  • Pearl Harbor

    Pearl Harbor
    Pearl Harbor occurred on December 7, 1941 in Honolulu, Hawaii when Japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor. The attack lasted for around two hours, destroying almost 20 American naval boats and 300 airplanes. The day after the attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ask Congress to declare war on Japan and the proposal was accepted.

    The Philippines Campaign
    •It was the invasion of the Philippines by Japan and the defense of the islands by Filipino and United States forces
    •The defending forces outnumbered the Japanese invaders.
    •The Japanese used their best troops and concentrated its forces hence they overrun most of Luzon.
    •Japanese believed they had won, so they withdrew their division.
    -enabled the Americans and Filipinos to successfully hold out for 4 more months
  • The Battle of Coral Sea

    The Battle of Coral Sea
    •First modern naval engagement in history
    •When the Japanese landed in the designated area, the allied forces attacked using their aircraft carriers.
    •Both sides suffered damages to their carriers, but the battle left the Japanese without enough planes to cover the territory.

    Battle of Midway
    • Naval battle between US and Japan and took place near Midway Island in Japan
    • Began when US bombers from Midway Island attacked Japanese
    • Fought almost entirely with aircraft
    • U.S. destroyed Japan's best aircraft carrier and some of its best naval pilots
    • Helped neutralize Japanese influence in the Pacific
  • The Battle of Guadacanal

    The Battle of Guadacanal
    First major offensive and decisive victory of the Allies in the Pacific theater. While Japanese troops were stationed in the Solomon Islands the US marines attacked, surprising the Japanese troops and taking control of an under construction air base. Both sides suffered many losses but by February 1943, Japanese retreated from Guadalcanal.

    - Second battle of the Philippine Sea
    Largest naval battle of WWII What happened:
    - Allies landed on Leyte
    - at the Suriago Strait, US Seventh Fleet destroyed a Japanese force and forced another to withdrawal
    - Japan wasn't able to move resources back home
    - Admiral Kurita Takeo sent fleet to Suraigo Strait and Leyte Gulf
    - San Bernardino Strait--US air and sub attacks
    - Japanese suffered major losses to their fleet

    General Kuribayashi’s strategies were marvelous. The Japanese fought entirely beneath the ground. They were also planning on fighting so hard their strategy was called “no Japanese survivors. The soldiers had a goal of killing at least 10 Americans before themselves. Iwo, Jima was Japanese soil. American air forces pounded Iwo in the longest aerial offensive of the war. 110,000 Marines in 880 ships were sent from the US to the island.

  • Battle of Okinawa

    Battle of Okinawa
    It was the largest and bloodiest battle in the Pacific in WW2. This battle was key to defeating the Japanese empire. Okinawa was crucial to the American war strategy; from there, they could successfully launch bombing raids on the Japanese homeland. The Japanese armies would retreat into the jungles, while hundreds of Kamikaze pilots would bomb the Marines. Even so, the US Marine Corps took control of the entrance of the Japanese headquarters on May 21. They took control of the capital.
