    FDR gives the highest priority to the development of the atomic bomb after the recommendation by Albert Einstein.This created the Manhattan Project

    This was a meeting in Teheran Iran between the big three (Stalin, Churchill, FDR) where they decided to open up a second front in France
  • D- Day

    D- Day. This was the day that operation overlord went into action. The allied soldiers planned a strategic attack to get a toehold in France and stormed the beaches of Normandy. Known as the longest day, D-Day results in a tremendous number of deaths and injuries.
  • Attempted Murder of Hitler

    Rommel, one of hitler's top advisors tries to murder him by planting a bomb in his headquarters. However, Hitler survived. Rommel poisoned himself to avoid being tried. Hitler refused to surrender.
  • Allies liberate Paris

    Hitler had ordered his troops to destroy Paris. However, they had not followed through on his command. On this date, the allies came through Paris and liberated it from the german rule that they had suffered for so many years.
  • Battle of the Bulge

    Hitler's last stand. Hitler sent the nazis in through the Ardennes mountains. They intended to create confusion and win back the region. However, they were defeated by the allies. Rather than a strategic win, they experienced a major loss, just about ensuring that they would lose the war.
  • Iwo Jima

    This was a crucial battle in the island hopping campaign. During a 36 day fight with tons of casualties, the americans won the pacific island. A famous photograph was taken of 6 US soldiers digging an american flag into the ground.
  • Fight for Okinawa

    Okinawa contained a vital air base for the United States. If they captured Okinawa, they would be able to bomb Japan. This was the most complex and costly of the battles in the island hopping campaign. Left Japan defenseless.
  • Mussolini Attempts to flee

    Mussolini attempted to flee to Switzerland. Instead, he was captured and executed.
  • Hitler Commits Suicide

    At this point in time, Hitler was shaken by the events of the war. The military was no longer following his orders and he had begun to go insane. So he, and a few of his friends, committed suicide.
  • V-E Day

    Germany surrendered to the allies in a little french school house that Eisenhower had previously used as his headquarters. FDR had died shortly before. The world celebrated a victory in Europe

    The first ever atomic bomb testing was successfully completed in New Mexico, creating an impressive flash.
  • 1st Atomic Bomb

    The first ever atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan leaving major devastation but didn't end the war.
  • 2nd Atomic bomb

    The last atomic bomb to ever be used (and the second), was by the US in Nagasaki Japan on this day. This did lead to the end of the war.
  • V-J Day

    Emperor Hirohito of Japan surrendered to the United States.
  • official surrender

    Japan officially surrendered to the United States aboard the USS Missouri.
