On March 25, 1931 a fight broke out on a Southern Railroad freight train. The fight occured between young white and black men that where traveling on the train. the train was stopped by posse. The nine young black men were accused of assult. they were also accused of rape by two white women on the train.

Ater the arrest off the black boys an army was called in cause of fears a mob would break out. The army was sent to the jail that night.

Over the cousre of a few days many of the nine boys were convicted and sentenced to death by jury in front of Judge A.E. Hawkins. All the men were tried in different courts not all in one. Roy Wrights case ended in a hung jury 11 jurors seek death sentence and one voted for life imprisonment.

Many people were shocked at the short time of the trial and the age of the kids, two organaztaions the National Association for the Advanced of Colored People and International Labor Defendants to over the case for the boys and represented them in appeal.

Ruby Bates is a witness for the defense. She denied that any rape happened and she was with Victoria the whole train ride. That had been with their boyfriends the night before which would explain things.

While being transportted to a Brimingham jail, Ozie Powell stabbed a deputy in the throat, the sheriff driving stopped the car and shot powell in the head. Powell and the deputy both survived the acccident.
