school of yesterday

  • school in early 1800s

In the early 1800s, there were schools where poor children could receive a very elementary education 'dame schools' as they were known, because they were usually taught by an elderly lady who needed a little income. They normally taught children of both sexes. Children from poor families normally started work as soon as they were old enough, so schooling was a very brief period for them.

Most children who attended church schools would have left at quite an early age to go to work, children often started work at ten years old or even younger.
  • education for girls became a serious aim

From the mid-1800s, girls education began to be taken more seriously, Frances Buss founded the North London Collegiate School in 1850, with the aim of giving girls a serious education rather than merely educating them in fashionable 'accomplishments'.
  • schooling became a government responsibility

In 1870 the Education Act was passed which accepted that basic schooling was a government responsibility; locally elected boards established schools, existing church schools were to receive government backing. Frances Buss handed over the North London Collegiate School to a trust which, as the Girls Public Day-Schools Company, established similar schools nationwide.
