Scarlet Letter

  • Before Pearl

    Hester is sent ahead by her husband, arrives in Salem. Falls in love with Dimmesdale. Chillingsworth probably begins journey over sometime now, considering it takes 6 months to travel overseas.
  • The Market Place

    Hester waits inside to be sentenced by the magistrates, and Chillingworth arrives in the marketplace. Hester is escorted out to be on public display, and he recognizes her, but does not reveal self.
  • The Jail Cell

    Hester has a conversation with Chillingsworth, who makes her agree to keep his identity a secret or else he would find her lover (Dimmesdale)
  • The Boring Times

    Hester slips into a pattern of helping everyone out, stays alone with only Pearl, teaches Pearl godly ways. Chillingsworth gets job as leech, almost literally! He is draining the life from Dimmesdale slowly. Hester is constantly amazed by Pearl, annoying us all with repeated oaths that the child is not hers.
  • The Meeting

    Hester meets with Dimmsdale in the middle of the night, on the platform, but he refuses to stand with her during the daytime. Later, he makes a wonderful sermon, and things go back to being boring again.
  • The Decision

    Hester sees how Dimmesdale is wasting away and decides to tell the truth. She warns Chillingworth what she is going to do, and he tries to stop her but can't then she reveals him to the mayor. After that, she meets with Dimmesdale in the forest, and they agree to run away together. Hester tears off the Letter in a grand moment. She tries to get Pearl to hug him, but she first freaks out because he mother tore off the A, and then refuses to because she sees him as a minister and not her father.
  • The Reveal

    Dimmesdale stands on the platform of the guilty, marking him, but people ignore him because they think he is so pure. Then he screams out for Hester and Pearl to join him, and they all crowd around as he gives this huge speech about how he is now the embodiment of sin, and he should wear the scarlet letter
    The Mayor accuses Chillingsworth and throws him out at the same time.
  • The Death

    Dimmesdale is too weak and old to carry on after his speech,and sinks to the ground, imparting some touching last words to Hester before dying. In admitting himself and taking the scarlet letter before dying, he took all of Hester's sin and the letter with him, so she is free to go on without the Scarlet Letter.
  • The Return

    Hester, lost in her soul, decided to return to the town, and regain the Scarlet Letter. The Letter becomes a saintly symbol of penance. Others flock to her for her understanding and forgiveness and wisdom.
  • After Pearl

    Pearl is the heir to Dimmesdale, took up all of the riches of Dimmesdale's estate and became richer than anyone in the New World. She dissapeared into the wild, only vauge reports drifting back "like driftwook in a murky sea"
