First Compound for Microscopes

1590

Hans and Zachrias Janssen created the first compund for microscopes in their teenage years.

First Cell Observed

1665

Robert Hooke observed the first cell wall which was a “honey combed” shaped object using a old compound microscope. What he saw was a dead tissue and a cell wall and he decided to call it a “cell” for the “individual compartments” he looked at in the cell wall.

First Cell Seen

Anton van Leeuwenhoek spotted a cell in a pond’s water with a microscope he adapted the lens to.

Basic Buliding Blocks

1838

Mathias Schlieden proposes that plants are made up of different cells and that the cells are “the basic buliding blocks of all plants”.

Cell Theory

1839

Theodor Shawn came up with the theory that cells were not only in plants but also in other living things like animals and their tissue. He also came up with the Theory “Cells are organisms and all organisms consist of one or more cells 2 - The cell is the basic unit of structure for all organisms” which also added to his Theory thatbcells were in animal’s tissue.

Another Part Added

1855

Rudolf Virchow added the third part to the cell Theory which stated that cells develop from other existing cells and dead cells come from healthy cells.
