Sara's Life Portrayed by Erickson's Theory

  • Adolescence

    Adolescence
    Sara (age 14) first experiences bullying from other girls at her high school, mostly regarding her heavy weight. Sara's self-esteem and body image began to plummet after this event. Throughout her high school years the bullying took a toll on Sara's emotional development.
    Erickson's fifth stage: Identity vs. Identity confusion
    The challenge at this stage in life is discovering who you are as an individual or becoming lost in confusion, often due to external causes, such as media or peers.
  • Early Adulthood

    Early Adulthood
    Sara (21), goes on her first date with Samuel. The date is a bit awkward as Sara struggles to accept that someone as great as Samuel could ever want to be with her due to her insecurities. They eventually part ways as a result.
    Erickson's sixth stage: Intimacy vs. Isolation
    The main challenge at this stage is forming close bonds with others, whether it be friendship or romantic. If this is not achieved, the individual may experience feelings of loneliness and isolation.
  • Late Adulthood

    Late Adulthood
    Now 65, Sara reflects back on her life surrounded by her 7 cats. Although she never married, Sara took advantage of her independence and earned an M.D. in Disease Research. She contributed incredible advances in the medical world and was highly regarded for her work. Sara feels fulfilled from life.
    Erickson's 8th stage: Ego integrity vs. Despair
    This last stage presents the challenge of how satisfied one is with their life. The definition of success varies, and will be different for everyone.
