Sacagawea gives birth to Jean Baptiste on February 14, 1805. This baby was also known as Pomp. Clark developed a strong connection to baby Pomp when Sacagawea and the baby joined the Expedition. Pomp and Sacagawea helped to convince Indians on the way to negotiate because they figured no war party would bring along a woman and a baby.
-
In spring 1805, Sacagawea joined the Corps of Discovery as Toussaints offer to the group for help. She was the only girl to travel on this expedition. Her baby Pomp was carried on her back in an indian cradleboard.

On of the main goals for the Corps of Discovery was to find a way to get to the Pacific Ocean. With the help of Sacagawea they were able to do this by the winter of 1805. Here they set up a camp, about halfway done with their journey.
-
There is a story of one winter day at this camp, some men from the corps went to examine a beached whale and having been starving, ate a lot of it. The extreme fats and oils made the starving men deathly ill and they probably would've died had Sacagawea not been there. Sacagawea had searched for ant andevery herb that could help and nursed them all back to health.

After many months with the Corps of Discovery, Sacagawea and Toussaint Charbonnaeu leave the expedition. It is claimed that Toussaint was paid $500 but Sacagawea recieved no pay for everything she did on the journey. This played a role in Sacagawea being a symbol for women's rights more than once.
-
Clark had made a promise to Sacagawea while on their journey that he'd pay for Jean Baptiste's education. He eneded up raising the child he had grown so close to on the expedition in St. Louis. This happend around the time of Sacagawea's death.
