S.S 1943 - 1970 Civil Rights Movement

  • White Primary is abolished in Georiga

    White primary was where blacks weren't able to vote in the normal election. They were allowed to vote in the general election, but the constitution didn't explicitly talk about the primary election so they didn't allow blacks to vote there. The court case King v. Chapman went to supreme court and it was declared unconstitutional. In 1946 was the first time blacks voted in the primary election.
  • Intergration of the armed forces

    Harry Truman said, "that there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion, or national origin." This was a great start for blacks in the civil right movement.

  • Brown vs Board of Education

    The civil right community started a case against The Board of Education that went all the way to supreme court about school being segregated. He wanted schools to be intergrated. The supreme court ruled segregation of schools unconstitutional and went against the fourteenth amendment. It was later overtaken by Plessy vs. Ferguson case in 1896.
  • Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Rosa Parks was asked to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus to a white passenger. She refused and Rosa was arrested. When Martin Luther King Jr. heard about this, he had a meeting at his church. He said, "the only way to protest was to boycott the bus company." following, African-Americans avoiding bus to their best of their ability. This harmed the bus economy so the whites fought back with fighting.
  • Change to Georgia state flag

    Georgia people wanted to have a flag to represent the old Confederate flag.Mnay white people loved the idea becuase the symbol was against integration.
  • Crisis at Central High School and the "Little Rock Nine"

    African-American kids, nicknamed the "Little Rock Nine". When they got to the school a mob had formed and they were threating to lynch them. The governor had to call in the national guard just to get the kids in the school.
  • Sibley Commission

    The most school didn't integrate and whoever wanted to interact will not get any more funding from the government. The Sibley Commision was founded to help the problem of integration of schools. The founder was John Sibley. 2/3 of Georgians said they would rather the school closed than integrated.
  • Freedom Rides

    It started with a group of African-Americans from Washington D.C. going to the deep south in two busses. They were verbaly abused, and later beaten and abused.
  • Albany Movement

    African American wanted to see the segreation on train was real os they sat in the whites-only section at an Albany GA train station. They go arrested and many started following their path and also getting arrested and at one point 500 people were in jail or out on bond Including MLK. This went on for months.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965 passed

    This act got rid of any voting discrimination against African-Americans and women. The act was signed by president Lyndon B. Johnson.
  • MLK assassinated

    MLK was killed with a shot in the face from Harvey Lowmeyer. He was shot in front of a toy store.
  • All Georgia schools integrated

    All the schools in Georgia were integrated. No more whites-only schools in GA.
