Edgar Allan Poe was born as Edgar Poe on January 19, 1809 to a Scotch-Irish family in Boston, Massachusetts. His birth parents were Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins (1787-1811) and David Poe (1784-1810). Both Poe's parents were actors but Poe's dad left Elizabeth when poe was 1 year old.

Eliza Arnold Hopkins Poe was a successful actress who died on her theatrical tour on December 8, 1811 from tuberculosis when poe was only 2 years old.

On December 10, 1811, John Allan and Frances Allan in Richmond, Virginia, adopted Poe after his mother died. John Allan was a successful tabacco merchant in Richmond. He was not legally adopted by this couple so he did not take their last name and instead he used it as his middle name.

Poe is baptized by the Reverend John Buchanan and christened as “Edgar Allan Poe,” with the Allans presumably as godparents.
