    The French and Indian War

    War between Great Britain and the French and Indians. Many American Colonists fought with the British in this war.
  • The Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act
    The Sugar Act was the first act in which the British initiated a tax on the American colonists without their consent.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act
    Required that all printed products have a seal of the king(stamp). This raised the taxes tremendously on printers and writers. Coincidentally the people that spread the word on opinions of the king and Britain.
  • The Stamp Act Congress

    The Stamp Act Congress
    The Sons of Liberty was formed in order to deal with this event. This also gave colonist a model for the Continental Congress.
  • Townshend Acts

    Townshend Acts
    Placed a tax on many of the products in America and was finally appealed but not without repression from the local citizens. This led to a large number in British troops sent to the Americas.
  • The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre
    Colonists were harassing British soldiers. British soldiers fired upon the colonists. Five americans were killed. The postal service allowed for the rest of the colonies to be informed.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party
    Response to the Townshend Acts and in particular the tea act where tea was thrown into the bay.

    The First Continental Congress
    A group of people from each colony(delegates) who decided on colonial affairs in an associated fashion. They came together in response to the intolerable acts.
  • The Battles of Lexington and Concord

    The Battles of Lexington and Concord
    “Shot heard round the world” took place at Lexington. British marched on Concord because it was an american arms depot. Paul Revere’s famous ride alerted Concord and the nearby towns of the British march.
  • The Second Continental Congress

    Created the continental army with George Washington at the lead, Declaration of Independence,and the Articles of Confederation.
  • George Washington named Commander in Chief

    First president of the United States. Made commander in chief because of his prowess as a general in the French and Indian War.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Battle of Bunker Hill
    Actually fought on Breed’s Hill. A battle where the continental army was attempting to protect a local Boston port and retreated but not without dealing heavy casualties to the British army.
  • Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" published

    Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" published
    Incited revolution through his writing with diction that the common man could comprehend. Paine was also angered at the Stamp Act which severly effected his business.
  • The British evacuate Boston

    The British evacuate Boston
    British evacuate Boston due to George Washington’s placement of troops and cannons on a hill overlooking Boston.
  • Richard Henry Lee proposes Independence

    Richard Henry Lee proposes Independence
    Richard Henry Lee proposed independence to the Second Continental Congress.
  • Declaration of Independence adopted

    Declaration of Independence adopted
    The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4th 1776, Independence day. The Declaration was actually approved on the second. The Declaration was published in the Pennsylvania Gazette
  • Declaration of Independence signed

    Declaration of Independence signed
    The Declaration was signed by each delegate who supported it in the Second Continental Congress.
