When news of the Boston Tea Party reached London, King George III stated- “We must either master them totally or leave them to themselves.” In response to the Boston Tea Party, the Parliament passed the Coercive Acts. Coercive Acts, 1774, is also known as the ‘Intorable Acts’. Intolerable means painful and unbearable.

The military Governor, General Thomas Gage, of Boston, had an order from Parliament to seize weapons and arrest leaders of the Massachusetts militia. Gage had learned that there was a stockpile of arms and ammunitions 20 miles northeast of Boston in Concord.

Due to Revere and Dawes's warning, 70 Minutemen were waiting for the 700 English Redcoats on the Morning of April 19th, 1775. An unexpected shot was fired, and both sides engaged, 8 minutemen lay dead. Few weapons were found in Lexington a small part of a big group of 120 British troops marched on to Concord and the home of Retired Colonel Barrett’s farm. Finding weapons, the 120 marched back to the rendezvous point of The North Bridge.

Washington arrived in the Boston area in July 1775, shortly after the battle of Bunker Hill. The MIlitia ringed the city, and morale was good. Every day the size of the Militia grew with new recruits showing up. But Washington realized that he was lacking key factors for a victory. He realized the men were disorganized and lacking. By Spring, March 17 1776 Washington thought his troops were ready to fight, and the cannons made it from northern New York.

King George III went to Germany to hire more than 30,000 German mercenaries called Hessians to fight the colonists with the British troops.
