The French and Indian war, also known as The Seven Year war, had lasted from 1756 to 1763. During 1754 and 1755, the French had won a string of victories, defeating George Washington, Gen. Edward Braddock, Governor William Shirley. In July 1758, the British had won their first great victory at Louisbourg. This proclamation closed down colonial expansion westward beyond Appalachia. It was the first measure to affect all 13 colonies. The proclamation forbade private citizens and colonial government frim buying land or making agreements with natives. The Proclamation of 1763 failed to stop the tide of the westward expansion.
