  • Plessy v Ferguson

    Plessy v Ferguson
    Plessy v Ferguson was the first landmark court case for black civil rights. It ruled that if the blacks and whites were going to be separated they would have to be equal. The impact was that it set up a foundation for others to defend their rights in the future.
  • Brown v Board of Education

    The case started because the Kansas school Board didnt allow a child to study at Topekas school (white school). The african american claimed that their 14th amendment eight was violated because that wasnt being equal. This had a bkg impact on many other schools because it showed that the government was not going to bend the law.
  • Murder of Emmett Till

    Emmett Till was kidnapped and murdered by two white men. He supposedly entered a store and whistled at a white woman provoking her husband and friend to murder 11 year old Emmett Till. This pushed people to fight for equality with the white Americans.
  • Rosa Parks & the Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Rosa Parks & the Montgomery Bus Boycott
    Rosa parks was an African American idol to many. She stood up for what she believed and refused her seat to a white person. she had a big impact on m any african american women and persuaded many to join the cause.
  • Founding of Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) & Martin Luther King

    This was one of the many peaceful civil rights organizations. It was created when the Alabama bus boycotts were happening. They marched to promote anti-racism.
  • Little Rock Nine & Central High School

    Little Rock Nine & Central High School
    Laws allowing black students to go to ‘white’ high schools were passed but Central high school did not want to allow that. They had 9 African American students but they were harassed daily. Only one of the 9 graduated and it had a big impact on others because it showed that others could also make it through the abuse.
  • Greensboro Sit-in

    African American teens created the sit ins. They sat in ‘white only’ places and received abuse from white Americans. It had a huge impact on young African Americans and encouraged them to join the fight.
  • Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) & Freedom Summer

    The SNCC had begun fighting for civil rights in Mississippi and became national. The goal of Freedom Summer was to gain attention towards the treatment African American protesters in Mississippi were experiencing. It actually had gained a lot of attention and many joined the cause.
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders
    Protesters created these rides to challenge the racism happening in the southern part of the country.
  • March on Washington

    This was a peaceful march led by MLK in protest to gaining civil rights. It united many civil rights organizations and made their voices be heard. It became one of the most famous marches in US history.
  • Civil Rights Act

    President Lyndon B. Johnson was the one who passed the act. He prohibited discrimination in public places. It had a big impact on the morality of African Americans because they couldnt be harassed in their workplace.
  • Assassination of Malcolm X

    Malcolm X was a christian man who converted to the religion of Islam. Many muslims detested him because he driftedd from the Islamic beliefs. He had an impact on many angered African american because of his violent ways.
  • Voting Rights Act

    This act was passed by President Lyndon Johnson and seek to lessen discriminatory actions. It prohibited many unfair voting practices mainly in the southern states. It had a big impact on the number of votes the race for presidency had and also allowed for the president to be chosen by african americans too instead of just whites.

    MLK was a peaceful black civil rights activist. He was widely hated by many Americans and was harassed many times. MLK had a huge impact on leading people to protest peacefully for what they want
