Was born in a poor peasant family in the Quiche branch of the Mayan culture, at the Aldea Chimel in Guatemala.

As well as her father she joined to the Comitte of the Peasant Union (CUC).
That year his brother was arrested, tortured and killed by the army. -
Some of the members of her family were tortured and murdered by the military police. Her father was burnt when he was still alive, inside the Spanish embassy where he was in a protestant act.
Her mother also died after having been arrested, tortured and raped. -
She joined to this radical group in which her contribution consisted of educating the Indian peasant population in resistance to massive military oppression.

During this year, she participated in two important events: The union to the UNESCO (The Uniated Nations) and the mention in The Guiness World Records as she was the youngest and the first Guatemalan native to recieve the nobel Peace Price.

She was a presidential candidate in her native Guatemala. Gathering only about three percent of the vote (sixth place out of fourteen candidates) in the first round of elections, she couldn´t pass to the run-off, which then was won by Alvaro Colom.
