James Marshall discovered gold when he was building a milll but nobody really pay attention to it. Then, a storekepper found a bottle of gold dust proving there was gold in the American River. It was then put into the newpaper which caused thoudands of people to rush to California to get gold. -
Emancipation Proclamation
It was issued by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. The Proclamation freed 3 out of the 4 million slaves all through out the United States. After this happened lots of slaves joined the Northern army to help fight in the war. -
54th Massachusetts Infantry
It was a voluntary regiment which consisted mostly of African Americans. They were authorized in March of 1863 and were active from 1863 to 1865. They were led by Colonel Shaw and they served in the multiple battles. -
13th Amendment
It was issued by President Lincoln. This was the act that abolished slavery once and for all. However, it didin't stop Black Codes and white supremacist groups groups from being a threat twoards the freedmen. -
Reconstruction
This was the period of time after the Civil War from 1865 until 1877. It was where the North and Republicans tried to rebuld Southern economy and governments and to provide support for the Freedmen. -
14th Amendment
It was the amendment that granted citizenship to all people who were born or naturalized in the United States (including the newly freed slaves). It also forbids states to deny any citizen the right of life, liberty, or property with due process of law. -
15th Amendment
This Amendment granted African American men the right to vote because it is a right of citizens. It stated that the right to vote shall not be denied by the US or any state because of race or color.
