Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born on March 6th 1475 in Caprese, Italy. Born to a family that had been small-scale bankers for generations, by the time Michelangelo was born, had lost its status. The family returned to Florence months after he was born, where he was then to be raised.

Michelangelo was sent to Francesco da Urbino to study grammar but showed no interest in it. After being apprenticed to Ghirlandaio, at age 13, Michelangelo started pursing his artistic abilities. Planning to be there for a three year term, Michelangelo left with all knowledge after just one year.

Lorenzo de Medici was a powerful and wealthy duke. He had set up a school which Michelangelo ended up going to. After only attending for a few days, he produced a perfect stone of a faun.

The famous Pietà is a sculpture that shows the Virgin Mary grieving over Jesus's body. This statue is special from all the others because its the only one that Michelangelo ever signed. Some consider this piece to be his best work of art.

After Savonarolas execution, Florence became a republic. With this being said Michelangelo was able to return to his home where he later sculpted a marble Cupid.

Asked by the consuls to finish a project from 40 years earlier, The Statue of David was created. This sculpture served as a symbol of Florentine freedom placed at the Florence Cathedral. This extraordinary piece demonstrated the technical skill and "strength of symbolic imagination" that Michelangelo was capable of, later becoming one of his most famous pieces of work.

As a result of fleeing Florence, Michelangelo is declared a traitor. Returning before the imperial forces, he's forced into hiding. The pope later offers him immunity in return for continuing to work on the Medici Chapel figures.

In 1564 Michelangelo dies in Rome being 88 years of age. His body was later taken to Florence where he requested to be buried.
