  • Black Codes

    Black Codes
    Black codes were ment to give freed African Americans no rights. They were to make life as horrible as it could-resembling their lives when they were slaves. The white people wanted to keep the power to themselves.
  • Freedmen's Bureau

    Freedmen's Bureau
    The bureau was ment to help freed slaves get back on their feet. It provided food, clothing, schools, and help finding jobs. This was initiated by Abraham Lincoln.
  • Abraham Lincoln Assassination

    Abraham Lincoln Assassination
    Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth becuase he wanted to abolish slavery. Booth thought that if he got rid of Lincoln another president would come along that did want slavery.
  • Ku Klux Klan

    Ku Klux Klan
    The Klan came out at night wearing white robes and carrying torches. They used their torches to set African American's houses on fire. They also used terrorist methods to torture them. Violence and intimidation were also used.
  • 13th Amendment

    13th Amendment
    This amendment says that all slavery is to stop. Many people were then angry because slavery was banned. Even though slavery was ended, Southers and many others still made freed slave's lives feel like slavery never ended.

    This act was ment to protect the rights of freed slaves and give equal rights. This law got rid of black codes. Congress passed this act passed this act to hopefully get rid of hate.
  • Radical Republicans

    Radical Republicans
    Radical Republicans strongly disliked slavery. They wanted equal rights for former slaves. They also attempted to reconstruct the states after the Civil War.
  • The Grandfather Clause

    The Grandfather Clause
    This clause was started to ensure that African Americans didn't vote. If a freed slave's father could read/write/voted before, you could automatically vote too. Even if you couldnt afford to pay or you faioled the literacy text you could still vote.
  • Cash Crop

    Cash Crop
    A major cash crop during the reconstruction period was cotton. A cash crop is any crop that sells for a lot of money/sells good. Freed slaves picked cotton from the same fields they did when they were slaves.
  • 14th Amendment

    14th Amendment
    This amendment overruled the decision of the Dred Scott case. It said that any person born in the United States is a citizen. There is also equal protection to every citizen.
  • 15th Amendment

    15th Amendment
    The 15th amendment states that every American citizen has the right to vote no matter color, race, or previous condition of servitude. Radicals saw an opertunity to make the Democratic Party not be so strong in the South. Also many black men were able to serve in Congress in some way.
  • Amnesty Act

    Amnesty Act
    This act made it so almost all whites could be in Congress and vote again. It also gave back rights to citizens who support the Democrats. The Liberal Republicans passed this act.

    Poll taxes required a payment to vote. These were ment to make it so African Americans could not vote. These taxes were ment to limit their freedom.

    Plessy vs. Ferguson
    This case is a landmark in the United States Supreme Court. It upheld the Jim Crow Laws and segregation. "Seperate but equal" was a popular saying for this case.

    Jim Crow Laws
    These laws required seperation of races in almost every public place. This ment that a black boy and a white girl could not go to school togather. Most Americans supported these laws.
