Protagonist meets Maxim at Monte Carlo, they fall in love and she agrees to marry him, and move to his home, Manderley.

At Manderly she meets M.S Danvers who seems to hate her. The protagonist feels like she is being compared negativly by everyone.
" They only came to call at Manderly, becuase they were curious and crying. Tey liked to critisized my looks, my figure, they like to watch how maxim and i behaved to eachother, wether we seemed fond of one another, so that they could go back afterwords and discuss us saying, very different from the old days," "they came becuase they wanted to compare me to Rebecca..." -
Protagonist feels more at home- this is becuase a costume party has been thrown in her honour. She is excited to show everyone/maxim her suprise costume
"all the pictures in the gallery would make good coustumes" MS DANVERS "especially that one of the young lady in white, with her hat in her hand -
Ms Danvers confronts narrator about the costume and forces Mrs De winter to attempt to commit suicide from rebeccas bedroom window
"there is not much for you to live for, is there? why dont you jjump now and have done with it? Then you won't be unhappy anymore?' -
Ms Danvers suggests a costume to Ms De Winter that unknowingly to her, rebecca had worm to her final Manderly Ball. Maxum thinks it was deleberate and the marrige seems to be over.

Eventually the narrator learns that Maxim Hated rebecca and was responsible for her murder
" You though i loved rebecca? You thought i killed her loving her? I hated her, I tell you. Our marrage was a fass from the very first." -
Protagonist is happy to learn that maxim was never in love with rebecca and decides to stand by him. She is extatic when maxim stateshis love for her.
"Maxim had never loved her. I did not hate her anymore." -
Narrator is overcome with relief when Rebecca's death is officially declared as suicide, which was helped by the truth of her cancer being revealed.

"Manderley was ours no longer. Manderley was no more."
