Rebecca Chapter 12-13

  • New Maid

    Mrs Danvers arranges a new maid for the narrator; named Clarice who had been away from Manderley for some time. " in a sense she was as new to Manderley as i was. I felt at ease with her." The narrator feels comfortable around Clarice.
  • Beatrices wedding gift

    Beatrice sent the narrator four volumes of the history of painting for her wedding gift. She placed the books on a desk in the morning room, but they were not stable and knocked over a china cupid, (which had been a wedding gift to Rebecca) and broke into pieces on the floor. "I knelt to the floor and swept up the pieces into my hand. I found an envelope to put them in. I hid the envelope at the back of one of the drawers in the desk." p.156
  • The Blame Game

    Mrs Danvers had noticed that the ornament was missing from the morning room and blamed Robert; who is responsible for bringing in the flowers and place the vases in the morning room. However the narrator admits to breaking the cupid because Robert was upset about the whole thing. "I meant to tell you before, - but i forgot. The fact is I broke that cupid when i was in the morning-room yesturday." p.158
  • Maxim and the narrator argue

    They are once again questioning their relationship and the reason why they really got married "I suppose thats why you married me, I said; you knew I was dull and quiet and inexperienced, so that there would never be any gossip about me." p.162
  • Chapter 13

    Maxim goes away to London for two days and the narrator was dreading her time alone at Manderley. "He was away for two days and i was left alone. I dreaded his going" p.168
  • Jasper's walk

    The narrator takes Jasper for a walk, through Happy Valley and to the cove. He runs across to the other bay, and the narrator encounters Ben again. The narrator discovers alot about Rebeccas attitude towards Ben, he tells her that Rebecca said "If i catch you looking at me through the windows here ill have you put to the asylum" p.174
  • Whos in the West Wing?

    The narrator spots a car hidden behind bushes just outside the lodge gates. She walks down to the car and once she is at the car she turns around and looks at the house. She notices that someone is looking out of the window in the west wing. " I looked up at the house, and as i did so i noticed with surprise that the shutters of one of the windows in the west wing had been opened up. Somebody stood by the window. A man" p.176
  • The uninvited visitor

    The narrator went up into the house and into the morning room. She heard footsteps, coming down from the west wing so she hid behind the door. It was the man that was at the window in the west wing and Mrs Danvers. As they came into the room, the narrator came out from behind the door and she met Mr Jack Favell; Rebeccas cousin, and an old friend of Mrs Danvers. "it would be very sporty and grand of you if you did not mention this little vistit of mine to Max?He doesnt exactly approve of me"p182
