  • Chapter 1

    Chapter 1
    Flashback to Manderley. Describing how overgrown and overrun everyuthing has become, thus creating an extremely dark mood. The narrator explains how the home that she once loved is no more.

  • Chapter 2-4

    Chapter 2-4
    Narrator is in Monte Carlo as a paid companion to Mrs. Van Hopper and she meets Maxim De Winter, the owner of Manderley. She recieves a note from Maxm, apologising for his 'rudeness at tea'. Mrs Van Hopper becomes ill.
  • Chapters 5-7

    While Mrs Van Hopper is ill, the narrator begins meeting with Maxim. This continues for 3 weeks and they begin to develop a close relationship. Mrs Van Hopper and the Narrator are sceduled to leave Monte Carlo, so Maxim impulsively proposes to her and she agrees. After a quick honeymoon, she moves into Manderley and meets Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper who seems to resent her.
  • Capters 8-11

    Beatrice, Giles and Frank visit Manderley for Lunch. The narrator find out that Mrs Danvers "Simply adored Rebecca". They visit the beach and the narrator finds Rebeccas boatshed and is introduced to Ben. Maxim seem angry at her and is cold about talking about Rebecca. From Frank, the narrator learns for about Rebecca and her death.

  • Chapters 12-14

    A local girl names Clarice is hired as a maid for the narrator, who is still struggling in her new role, accidently breaking a vase and not telling anyone, which results in her having to embarrassingly apologise. She feels like her marriage is failing. She meets Jack Favell and goes into Rebeccas room, toured by Mrs Danvers.
  • Chapters 15-17

    Upon meeting Favell, the Narrator learns that he was Rebeccas cousin. Maxim gets angry when he learns of his visit. The narrator meets Grandma with Beatrice, who says "Why did not Maxim bring Rebecca, Im so fond of her". WHen organising the annual ball, Maxim gets angry when he sees the narrator is wearing the same dress as Rebecca.
  • Chaptyers 18-19

    Maxim is missing. Mrs Danvers tries to make the narrator commit suicide by nearly pushing her out of a window. Maxim later reveals to the narrator that he shot Rebecca and she is in the cabin.

  • Chapter 20

    Maxim and the narrator dicuss the true story of Maxim's marriage to Rebecca. She was beautiful, charming and brilliant but she was also wicked, selfish and deceitful. Their marriage was a sham from the beginning. Rebecca told Maxim that she would be a wonderful mistress of Manderely, but in return he would have to let her live and she pleased. She and her cousin Jack Favell were lovers. and for years everyone believed they had a perfect marriage.
  • Chapter 20 - Death

    Chapter 20 - Death
    Rebbeca pushed Maxim too far one night. He took a gun down to the cottage, hoping to scare Favell but instead Rebecca laughed and taunted him, so he shot her. Then he hid her in a sailboat and locked her corpse below the cabin, took the boat out to sea and sank it.
  • Chapters 24-27

    Chapters 24-27
    The case is dissmissed and it is found that Rebecca has terminal cancer. The narrator feels a sense of closure and relief as she now knows the truth about Rebecca. Upon return, Mrs Danvers is missing and it is found that Manderley is up in flames.
  • Chapters 21-23

    Maxim is asked to identify the new body. Narrator takes charge of home and they go to court. People think it was murder but it is decided it was suicide. Favell come to Manderley and says "Not the sort of note you write when your going to commit suicide" and threatens to turn Maxim into the police.
