  • Sneaky

    Sneaky

I spent every night with a flashlight under the covers to stay up and read. I would get into trouble for staying up past bedtime but really enjoyed The Magic Treehouse books at this age.
  • The Boxcar Children

    The Boxcar Children

My first grade teacher is the first adult I remember reading to me, and every day I would look forward to the next chapter of The Boxcar Children. I was so curious and, even after reading the series on my own, didn't find anything as good or nostalgic as that first book.
  • Advanced Reader

    Advanced Reader

In third grade, my teacher told me I was reading at a college level. Wow! This was the start of my "gifted kid" experience, specifically gifted kid burn out
  • A Series of Unfortunate Events

    A Series of Unfortunate Events

Whenever people ask what my childhood book series was, this is what I say. It was the first time I was actually passionate about collecting and reading every book in a series. I still have the books (can see them as I'm writing this) and the passion for collecting series' continues.
  • Twilight

    Twilight

I read all four books within like a month and was obsessed! I could not put them down. Soon after, I read them all two more times.
  • Battle of the Books

    Battle of the Books

My school counselor convinced me to join a BOB team that needed one more member. I didn't really want to and didn't enjoy. We made it to finals, but then lost and I was so embarrassed.
  • 6th Grade Reading

    6th Grade Reading

The first year of middle school was rough, but my reading teacher made me love it! It was such a fun class that continued my enjoyment of reading.
  • Fan Fiction

    Fan Fiction

In my freshman year of high school I discovered fan fiction. Woah. I could not get enough. I was reading it in amusement parks and museums and at school. Even though my passion for reading novels diminished, I was consistently read fan fiction because it was short and sweet, and about things I already had a connection to.
  • Sophomore English

    Sophomore English

I absolutely hated this teacher and the pressure he put on us. In this class, reading became a chore and wasn't fun anymore. This year ended with COVID, so it was sort of a goodbye to reading in general with the lingering memory a poor one. For the next year I barely had any motivation to read.
  • Jodi Picoult

    Jodi Picoult

Somehow I got a hold of A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult. I really enjoyed this new genre of fiction and have since collected almost all of her books, including a new signed copy! Ever since that first book, I've always been reading one of hers. She is my favorite author!
  • Senior English

    Senior English

Even though the teacher wasn't my favorite, he reignited my joy of reading. He allowed choices of books to read and gave us creative projects that enhanced our learning. I started to read for fun again this year!
  • Hunger Games

    Hunger Games

Last summer, I borrowed a friend's Hunger Games book for a beach day. It was so good! I then took the other two in the trilogy home with me and consumed all the content I could. I think this is the best series and movie adaptation ever. Now, I own my own copies and am annotating them while I read.
