The meeting
Emma and Dylan meet for the first time. Immediately, Emma develops a crush. Later that night, they talk under the stars and begin to form a connection. Dylan uses the stars in her eyes as inspiration for a painting. -
The "uh-oh" kiss
After the Ellenburgs have their first meeting with Dylan's social worker, Dylan goes to check on Emma because she was acting weird at dinner. At the end of their conversation, Emma tries to kiss Dylan but he turns his head so that she only catches his cheek. This leaves Emma mortified and Dylan extremely flustered, -
The mall
While at the mall for family movie night Emma and Dylan are sent to go get tickets while the rest of the family shops. While on their way, they get stopped by a girl who likes Dylan, however the feelings were not mutual. So, knowing about Emma's feelings for hims, Dylan pretends Emma is his girlfriend and kisses her as proof. In this moment, he has taken Emma's first kiss and given her hope that he likes her back. -
Confessions and Apologies
After not speaking for days, Dylan attempts to apologize to Emma with a brand new copy of Wuthering Heights. During the resulting argument, he confesses his feelings for Emma resulting in another kiss. Afterwards he explains that even though he wants to, they can't be together. -
"I don't care"
After Emma went homecoming shopping withe her best friend, Karmin and her brother Keegan, Dylan came to her room to talk to her. He had seen her with Keegan and gotten jealous and decided that he didn't care what the consequences were, he wanted to be with Emma. -
Homecoming and a Plan
After Keegan buys Emma the dress he bought her for the dance and Mrs. Ellenburg realizes that her daughter is crushing on someone, Emma comes up with a plan to cover up her and Dylan's relationship. That plan being that she would use Keegan as her decoy boyfriend. However, at homecoming, she neglects Dylan causing him to pull her away in a jealous fit. -
Finally Opening Up
After Emma had been neglecting Dylan for almost a week after her decoy relationship with Keegan started, he begins to give her the cold shoulder. When she goes to talk to him about it, Dylan tells Emma everything he has been going through, including the events that caused him to be put in foster care. -
The Visit
After opening up to Emma, Dylan asks her to accompany him to visit he father in a mental institution. This visit was very upsetting seeing at Mr. McAndrews is the man that killed Dylan's mother and almost killed Dylan. Now, he is the man preventing Dylan from being adopted. -
Pills and Baseball
Before the Sunday family outing, Emma finds out that Dylan had been taking pills to help him stay up and focus on school, his art showcase and keeping up their relationship. After they talk, the family goes to the baseball fields to play against another family. Mr. Ellenburg invites Keegan, who Dylan hates for good reason. After some words are exchanged, Kegan and Dylan fight, leading Emma to break up with Keegan. -
Thanksgiving
After Thanksgiving dinner and a conversation with her grandmother, Emma realizes she is in love with Dylan. After everyone leaves the house, Dylan comes and visits Emma and gives her a heartfelt speech on why he is thankful for her. This leads to the couple almost expressing their love for each other. -
The Showcase
After being forced into doing an art showcase by an overbearing Mr. Ellenburd, Dylan wins only to see his foster father walking out as his award is presented. This leads to a parking lot argument between the two. Once Dylan and Emma arrive home, they get into an argument ending with an angry Dylan taking a pill and leaving the house in a rage -
The Accident
After checking Dylan's room to see if he was back in time for their scheduled date under the starts, Emma sees her dad rushing to the car. She finds out that Dylan has been in an accident. He had accidentally taken a sleeping pill instead of the Adderall he meant to take. When they arrive at the seen, they find a barely recognizable Dylan and his completely destroyed car. -
Regionals
Amidst the grief over Dylan's accident and his comatose state, Emma has a dance competition on her birthday. While her family promised they would come and support no one does because they are focused on Dylan. When she tries to call her family to inform them that they had landed a spot at nationals, her calls were ignored. -
Therapy
After receiving her acceptance letters and deciding where she would attend college, Emma calls her dad to share the great news. Before she gets the chance to speak he yells at her to get to the therapy session about Dylan and hangs up. When she gets there, Emma tells her family how hurt she is about how she had been treated by them since Dylan had arrived and then walks out. -
The End
After Dylan wakes up from his coma, Emma comes home from college to visit him in the hospital. When she finds that he remembers her, they share a kiss. Afterwards, they decide that it isn't the right time for them to be together and they start over as friends.
