Second Continental Congress
The Second Continental Congess met in philadelphia on may 10, 1775. During the Revolutionary war, the Second Continental Congress became the nation's first government. -
Declaration of Independence
On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted, and proclaimed the colonies as a independent nation. -
Articles of Confederation
On November 15, 1777, the Articles of Confederation were approved. The Articles allowed the states to keep there independence and freedom. However Congress had little power and couldn't get involved with state affairs. Shays rebelion was a result of the lack of power the federal government had. -
Virginia Plan
The Virginia Plan was proposed in may 29, 1778. The Plan called for a bicameral government. Three seperate branches of government: executive, legislative, and judicial. Gave more power to the federal government, and called for representation by population. -
New Jersey Plan
The New Jersey Plan was proposed on June 15, 1778. Called for a unicameral congress. Wanted equal representation, and limited power to tax. Called for more that one person chosedn by congress, and a supreme tribunal appointed by executive. -
Philadelphia Convention
The Framers of the constitution met in philadelphia on may 25, 1787. They wanted to change the Articles of Confederation, but decided to start from scratch. The delegates met 89 out of the 116 days, through May 25, to September 17. -
9 states ratify the constitution
On june 21, 1788, New Hampshire became the ninth state to ratify the constitution.
