Raine Wyandon Cell Theory Timeline

  • Anton Van Leeuwenhoek

    Hooke

When he viewed a thin cutting of cork he discovered empty spaces contained by walls, and called them cells. The term cells stuck and he gained credit for discovering the building blocks of all life
He learned that if he placed the middle part of a small rod of lime soda glass into a very hot flame and then pull the hot glass apart to make 2 strands of glass and then put one strand in the flame to make a small glass sphere
He described for the first time spermatozoa.

  • Robert Brown

Brown observed that small particles ejected from pollen grains executed a kind of continuous and jittery movement, he observed the same things that happed to inorganic material. He discovered that if particles were a certain size, the movement continued. The theory was not limited to living matter. This was called the Brownian motion and there was no theory why the particles moved that way. Leeuwnhoek had observed the nucleus of cells, but Brown named it the cell nucleus.
  • Theodor Schwann

In the cell doctrine, he states his belief that all plant cells share a common structure and that new plant cells form from the nuclei of old plants cells. He created the cell doctrine/ cell theory with Matthias Schleiden.
He discovered a type of cell surrounding the axons and neurons of nerve fibers and called them Schawnn cells.
He believed that all plant cells share a common structure and that new plant cells form from the nuclei of old plant cells and that could be the same for animal cells.
  • Matthias Jacob Schleiden

Him and Schwann created a modern cell theory stating that the cell has hereditary information (DNA) that is passed on from cell to cell during reproduction.
The wrote the Contributions to Phytogenesis which states that the different part of the plant organism are composed of cells.
Recognized the importance of the cell nucleus that was discovered by Robert Brown.
stated that different parts of the cell organism are composed of cells or derivatives of cells.
  • Ruldolf Virchow

Used the microscope to examine tissue. He identified and named the disease leukemia.
Virchow discover that Schwann made a major error when they said that new cells are created from a fluid called blastema.
He established that all diseases can be traced to cells and that diseases attack normal cells.he used the cell theory to explain diseases in the organs and tissues of the body.
