This change took away Malala's ability to continue her formal education and be with her school friends and affected her future professional opportunities. At age 11 years, this disparate treatment due to her gender made an impression on Malala and likely motivated her to be in favor of equal educational rights for females (and males).

After a long and difficult recovery, Malala was even more determined that women should have a voice in their futures and she continued to continue to speak up for equal rights to an education regardless of gender.
