Population Movement

  • Panic of 1873

    Califonian working parties became enraged and wanted the Chinese to leave. To enforce this the leader a one such party went to rally's to address crowds to excite them to go against the Chinese immigrants. People attacked the Chinese; in the events following some Chinese died.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    Congress passed this act in order to deny people born in China a citizenship and the immigration of laborers. The exclusion act also placed more requirements on Chinese who were already in the country. One being they needed certifications to re-enter the country.
  • Attack on Chinese

    A mob of people attacked and killed Chinese residents and scared off hundreds more.

  • Extension of Chinese Exclusion Act

    This was put into place after the Chinese Exclusion Act expired in 1892 and was extended upon into the Geary Act.
  • Immigration Restriction League

    A group founded by wealth Bostonians in 1894 which was dedicated to prevent immigration by placing a literary test on those who wished to come to the United States. The measure reached all the way to the president where he vetoed the measure by calling it "illiberal, narrow and un-American".
  • Permanent Act

    The extended Chinese Exclusion Act now the Geary act was now made permanent in 1902. This change also added more restrictions that included a Chinese resident to register and obtain a certificate of residence. Without these the resident could face deportation.

    The mass movement of over five million southern blacks to the North between 1915 and 1960. Many of which who moved to major cities such as Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and New York
  • Racial Violence

    The most brutal racial incident to occured when white rioters went through African American neighborhoods to chase the African Americans out; killing 39 people.

    After the first large movemnt of 454,000 blacks to the North 800,000 then moved to the North in the 1920's

    The thrid movement occrued when 398,000 blacks followed the rest who had already went North.
  • Repeal of Exclusion Acts

    Congress repealed all the exclusion acts and gave a yearly immigration of only 105 Chinese per year and gave foreign born Chinese the right to seek naturalization.
  • Immigration Act

    This was when Congress passed the Immigration Act that overuled every act that had been passed until then. This act set the limit of 170,000 immigrants from outside the Western Hemisphere to come into the U.S.
