When Maya comes home from school one day her dad tells the entire family that they need to lose weight just because he came back from the doctor's office saying he was overweight. Maya then decides she could shead a few puonds herself, so with the help of Betty's exercises, she tries to lose a little weight. Also she uses Betty's lunch ideas to help her lose weight. By the end of the month, she loses 3 pounds. -

Maya relizes that her har is always frizzy and that she always wears it down or in a ponytail. She decides she will change it everyday when she goes to school. Betty's hair tips help her when she washng her hair and when she is doing her hair. -
Skin Problems And Makeup
Maya starts to relize that she is getting acne so she uses Betty's guide to help her with washing her face and using makeup to cover it all up. Maya and her mom go to the store to get makeup. She decides to use this makeup wherever she goes. She washes her face in the morning and at night and puts on makeup if shes going out in public. -
Colthes and What to Wear
With the help of Betty, Maya wears tacky 1950's trends to school, like fake perals. She wears fancy clothes to school and out in public. She starts to dress like a person form the 1950's. Maya starts to care about what people think of her. -
Away From Home
When Maya is picking partners for thed chior field trip, she ends up having no friends to partner up with. she is stuck with some seventh grader. While on the bus, Maya get introduced to this seventh grader and starts to interact with new kids ouside of her social group. -
Popular Attitude and Personality
Maya starts to sit with other groups of peope at lunch. Her original friends start to get mad. At home, Maya's dad reveals that he got a job in Georgia and that the entire family will be moving there this summer. Also, Maya starts to write to Betty Cornell herself. While all that is happening, Maya's favorite teacher dies of cancer. -
Be A Hostess
With the help of Betty's party plannign tips, Mays creates a goodbye party for herself. When she puts together the guest list, a lot of people can't come. With all of her new friends she met at lunch that didn't have dates to the upcoming 8th grade dance, she asked them to go to the dance with her and a bunch other people. A lot of people were shy but they ended up showing anyway. In that time Maya got a letter from Betty Cornell saying that she should keep up her experiment. -
Be A Hostess
Maya also starts to ask people what popular means to them. Most unpoular kids said everyone likes you an do you have to fit in. Most popular kids said being cool and haing out with the right crowd in a joking manner. This tells Maya that the popular crowd doesn't really think of themselves as popular. Maya relizes that Popular is just a word. Popularity is not about clothes, possessions, or ow you look, it about kindness, accetance, and how you treat others.
