    Abdul Sattar Edhi was born in gujrat in British India. He was 19 when his mother died. His personal experiences caused him to develop a system of services for old, mentally ill and challenged people.

    He initially started as a pedlar, later became a commision agent selling cloth in the karachi. After few years, he established a free dispensary with the help from his community. He later established a welfare trust, "Edhi trust".

    Edhi foundation runs the world`s largest ambulance services and operates free old people`s homes, orphanges, clinics, women`s shelter and rehab centers for drug addicts and mentally ill individuals. It has run relief operations in Africa, Middle East, the caucasus regions, eastern Europe and US where it provided aid following the New Orleans hurricane of 2005.

    Edhi foundation has an anuual budget of Rs,850 million. Edhi foudnation has 300 center across Pakistan and a center each in New York, London, Toronto, Tokyo, Sydney and Dhaka. According to Guinness Book of World records Edhi foundation now has the largest volunteer ambulance service , including a fleet of 400 ambulance, one helicopter and two air ambulance.
