  • Allies turn tide against Japan

    The Allies began to turn the tide against Japan. Starting with a daring raid on Tokyo and other Japanese cities. 16 bombers were led in the attack by Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle.

    Battle of the Coral Sea

    Allied forces succeeded in stopping hte Japanese drive toward Australia in the five-day battle. the fighting was done by airplanes. First time since Pearl Harbor, a Japanese invasion had been stopped and turned back.
  • Battle of Midway

    Chester Nimitz, commander of the American naval forces in the Pacific moved to defend the island of Midway.
    The Japanese were caught with their planes still on the deck of their carriers. At the end of the battle the Japanses had lost four aircraft carriers, a cruiser, and 250 planes.
    The battle of Midway gave the Americans their revenge on Pearl Harbor.
    It was the turning point in the war the Allies began to island hop, moving closer to Japan
  • U.S. Lands on Guadalcanal

    The U.S. Marines land on Guadalcanal. This was their first time being on the offensive side of the war. 19,000 troops stormed into the canal in the Solomon Islands. If the Japanese captured the island, they could cut off the sea route between Australia and America. If the Americans controlled the island, they would be better able to protect Australia from Japanese invasion.The Americans winnin the battle and gainin control of the islands.

    Iwo Jima

    A major battle in which the United States Armed Forces fought for and captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese Empire. The American invasion had the goal of capturing the entire island, including its three airfields, to provide a staging area for attacks on the Japanese main islands.[2] This month-long battle included some of the fiercest and bloodiest fighting of the War in the Pacific of World War II.
  • Philippines Campaign

    MacArthur returned to the Philippines in force on October 20, 1944. He waded in with Philippine President Sergio Osmeña, restaging the landing a second time for the newsreel cameras. The US Army forces met resistance, but steadily advanced, until the landings at Ormoc on December 7, 1944. Most of the fighting was at sea during the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

    Battle of Leyte Gulf

    The Japanese tested new tactics, the Kamikaze. The Kamikaze were suicide-planes. The damage done by the Kamikaze was great, but the battle was still a disaster for the Japanese. Japanese lost 3 ships, 4 aircraft carriers, 13 cruisers, and almost 500 planes in the two days.

    The Soviet agreed with Roosevelt that they would enter the war with Japan once the war in Europe ended. They entered 90 days as promised.

    Fought on the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa and was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific War of World War II. the Japanese increased their use of kamikaze tactics in an attempt to create unacceptably high casualties for the Allies
  • Atomc Bomb

    The B-29 Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, in the first nuclear attack in history.
  • Surrender

    The Japanese surrendered, ending the World War II. The effects of the Soviet entry and the atomic bombing were profound.
