  • Most Important Event- The bombing of the Pearl Harbor

    It was the first major act of violence and breach of protocol by the Japanese. Not only did it kill innocent people, but it also enraged the U.S for it was without reason, thus causiing the U.S to jump into WWII and abandon its policy of isolationism.

    The Fall of the Phillpines

    General Douglas MacArthur, under orders from Roosevelt, secretly left the Philippines by PT boat for Australia on March 11, 1942, leaving Major-General Wainwright in command.However, he ends up losing to the Japenese and surrendering Bataan, which is only the beginning. In the meantime, on the island of Corregidor, Japenese forces were met with stiff resistance from American troops. On May 6, General Wainwright surrendered Corregidor, the last American stronghold. The war now appears to be over.

    Attack on Pearl Harbor
    The Japanese launched a surprise air attack on the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. After just two hours of bombing, more than 2,400 Americans were dead, 21 ships had either been sunk or damaged, and more than 188 U.S. aircrafts had been destroyed.The attack at Pearl Harbor outraged Americans, causing the U.S. to abandon its policy of isolationism and declared war on Japan the following day, officially gettig the United States into World War II.
  • The Doolittle raid

    The Doolittle raid
    Americans wanted to get back at the Japanese for Pearl Harbor, and therefore decided to bring the war home to the Japanese. To do so, a group of 16 B-25 medium-ranged bombers, under the command of Colonel James Doolittle, would depart on the USS Hornet and then fly on to get in range to use their long range land bombers on Tokyo. However, due to the innacuracy of these bombs, only 13 hit Tokyo, while 3 hit Japense targets, four landed in China, and one in the Soviet Union.

    Battle of the Coral Sea

    The Battle of the Coral Sea was a battle fought by the Imperial Japanese Navy and the British and American Air Forces. The Japanese, after their occupation of Tulagi, sailed into Coral Sea in order to find and destroy American naval carriers. Several ships were destroyed and the Japanese scored a tactical victory because they destroyed American ships. But, the British and American forces were able to repel the Japanese Advance. This was the first battle where the ships could not see eachother.

    Battle of Midway

    The Battle of Midway is known as the turning point of the war in the Pacific because of the huge American Victory. Admiral Yamamoto's goal was to destroy American Carriers. His plan completely backfired when all four of the Japanese Aircraft carriers; Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu were sunk, and only one U.S Carrier was sunk. (Yorktown) Midway was also cost Japan 3,057 men, 2 battleships, 2 heavy cruisers, 1 light cruiser, 12 destroyers, 248 carrier-based aircraft, and16 floatplanes.

    Guadalcanal Campaign

    On August 7th, 1942, allied forces (Mostly American) landed on the islands of Guadalcanal to try and deny the Japanese the use of communication routes. The campaign resulted in 7,100 casualties for the Americans, and 31,000 for the Japanese. The main bulk of the fighting was for the control of Henderson Airfield. The Americans eventually were able to capture the islands and in result were able to protect Australia from invasion and they also protected the sea route from Australia to America.

    Battle of Peleliu

    The Battle of Peleliu, codenamed Operation Stalemate II, was an effort to capture an airfield on Peleliu Island by the U.S Marines and U.S Army. The battle was a huge cost to both sides for the U.S had 1,794 killed, and 8,010 missing or wounded. The japanese had 10,695 killed and 202 captured. The U.S Captured the airfield but it is debated whether or not the effort was necessary for the airfield had no further use afterwards.
