    The Japanese launched a suprise attack on PEarl Harbor in Hawaii. 4 US Navy ships were sunk and another four were damaged and 188 US Aircraft were destroyed as well, The attacks resulted in 2402 deaths and an additional 1282 were injured.

    The Japanese degeated the US' and the Commonwealth of the Phillippenes' forces, securing one of the finest natural harbors in the east. The land was reclaimed by the US in1945. It was one of the most costly battels in the Pacific Theater of Operations with the US losing a total of 12,804 men over a period of two months. The island's strategic value, however, was questionable and many debate if the cost justified the outcome.

    This was a major campaign in the Pacific that lasted six months. The American forces eventually gained control of the island and declared it secure on February 9th, 1943. This victory effectively stopped Japanese expansion in the Pacific and is considered to be just as important in the regard as the Battle of Midway.

    The Battle of Peleliu, codenamed Operation Stalemate II, was fought between the United States and the Empire of Japan in the Pacific Theater of World War II, from September–November 1944 on the island of Peleliu, present-day Palau. U.S. Marines fought to capture an airstrip on the small coral island.
