When Melody was born she was extremely disabled. She had no control over most of her body parts, inculding her arms, legs, hands, neck, head, and is unable to talk. To this day, the only thing she can use is her thumbs and her mind.

This story most offen takes place in either school, home, or Mrs. V's house. It begins in very late summer, just when school is starting.

Melody is the main character. Othr characters include her mom, her dad, and her neighbor Mrs. V. These people are often with her. Also, there are the classroom aides and her teacher. There is one aide who is very close to Melody, named Mrs. Shannon

Melody is almost completely unable to communicate with anyone, as she cannot talk. She has many words and thoughts, but cannot bring them out. She needs a way to express herself somehow. She needs a way to communicate.

Melody and Mrs. Shannon find a device online for people like Melody, that speaks for them. All she has to do is press the buttons on the screen with her thumbs to type sentences. The machine will say whatever she types.

Melody recieves in the mail the Meditalker computer that allows her to talk. She learns how to use it right away. She is creating more and more sentences to say to her classmates.

Melody shows everyone in her class her new Meditalker computer, and how she is able to talk now. Everybody is amazed by this, and even her parents break down in tears after hearing her talk to them.

Melody wants to take the test for the school's quiz team, the Whiz Kids. She is determined to make it on the team. She and Mrs. V. study every single day every minute, determined to get on this team.

Melody ends up taking the test for the quiz team, and does far better than she expected! She is the only student in the entire class to earn a 100%! She is the brightest kid on the team, and will be in competitions instead of being an alternate.

The quiz team ends up winning all of their meets and is going to the National championship! Melody and the rest of the team will be flying to Washinton D.C. for the final competitions!

When Melody gets to the airport for the flight to Washington D.C., she finds out that her flight had been cancelled and that the entire team had left without her that morning!

The quiz team ends up getting in ninth place overall. Melody is furious, and wants to know why the team ditched her. Even after being left at the airport, she insists on arriving at school that same day to show that nothing will defeat her.

The day after the National meet, Melody's mom accidently crashes into Melody's baby sister Penny when she was turning around in the driveway. Penny is sent to the hospital in an ambulance immediatly. Even after this horrible incident, Melody insists on going to school that day.

Melody goes to school and asks the team why they left her, and they all explained. They had taken an early morning flight because they were so excited, and nobody wanted Melody to come along. Melody was very hurt, and also very mad.

Penny comes home from the hospital with a large cast on her leg and a few internal injuries, but is going to be back to her normal self soon. Penny is happy to be home from the hospital.

The quiz team appoligizes to Melody for leaving her out, and quickly gives her the 9th place trophy. She quickly shatters this against the floor, with the entire class laughing with her, not at her.
