  • Iraq invades Kuwait

    Iraq invades Kuwait. Saddam Hussein proclaims Kuwait as a province of Iraq.
  • Operation Desert Shield begins.

    Operation Desert Shield begins.

    The first US forces arrive in Saudi Arabia. To protect them from Iraqi Invasion. If Iraq invaded Saudi Arabia, Iraq would control 1/5 of the worlds oil.

  • UN meeting

    UN authorizes any force necessary to remove Iraqi forces from Kuwait. Iraqis are given to 15 January to leave Kuwait.

  • Deadline passes for Iraqi withdrawal.

    President Bush gave Saddam time to withdraw from Kuwait, to prevent starting a war. Saddam did not respond to the warning.
  • Air campaign begins

    Air campaign begins

    against military leadership targets in Kuwait and Iraq (concentrating on Baghdad).
  • George Bush warns Iraq

    George Bush warns Iraq

    Congress grants President George H.W. Bush the authority to use military force.
  • Desert Storm begins

    Desert Storm begins

    as coalition ground forces drive on Iraqi forces in Kuwait.

  • 100 hour war

    After 100 hours, Iraq agrees to a ceasefire. Iraqi forces have retreated from Kuwait. The United States is satisfied with U.N. objectives and does not push on to Baghdad. Within Iraq, Saddam brutally crushes Shi'ite and Kurdish opposition.

  • Iraq accepts conditions for a permanent cease fire.
