He studied at the University of Georgia. Though smart he left in 1854.

He went to watch over his dad's coal mine. He was there untill the war started.

He was a supportor of the confederate cause. He made a group called the "Raccoon Roughs" to fight. His company was incorrparated in the 6th Alabama Regiment with Gordon as its captain.

He was put in command of the regiment and promoted to clonel.

He was wounded in the head by a Union bullet at the Battle of Malvern Hill.

He helped in covering a road in the Battle of Antietam called "Bloody Lane".

For his performance he was promoted to Brigadier General.

He battled near Fredericksburg and Salem Church during the Battle of Chancellorsville.

Gordon's brigade went to the Susquehanna River at Wrightsville.

Deploying for battle his brigade attacked and routed Brigadier General Francis Barlow's division on Blocher's Knoll.

Gordon launched a surprise attack on Union forces at Cedar Creek.Despite initial success, they were badly defeated when Union forces rallied.

Gordon Intended to attack Fort Stedman. Moving forward at 4:15 AM , his troops were able to quickly take the fort.Union quickly sealed the breach and by 7:30 AM Gordon's attack had been contained.

Confederate troops began retreating west with Gordon acting as a back up. Gordon was part of a Confederate force that was defeated at the Battle of Sayler’s Creek.

Lee, hoping to reach Lynchburg, asked Gordon to clear Union forces from their line of advance.

Returning to Georgia after the war, Gordon unsuccessfully campaigned for governor.

He was elected to the US Senate.

He became the first Commander-in-Chief of the United Confederate Veterans.

He later published his memoirs, Reminiscences of the Civil War.

Gordon died at Miami, FL and was buried at Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta.
