Nina Dobrev was born in Sofia, Bulgaria as Nikolina Konstantinova Dobreva. She has an older brother, Aleksandar Dobrev. Her father, Konstantin Dobrev, is a computer specialist, and her mother, Mihaela Dobreva, is an artist.

At the age of two Nina and her family moved to Toronto, Ontario where she was raised. She speaks fluent English, French and Bulgarian.

As a teenager Nina worked as a model, then began acting in commericals. Because of her exotic beauty and outstanding abilities, producers took an interest in her.

Nina has competed internationally representing Canada in Aesthetic Group Gymnastics. In 2005, she joined both the Senior World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark and the Junior World Championships in Plzen, Czech Republic. (bottom left of picture)

Nina's modeling jobs got her commericals, which then got her auditions for roles in feature films and tv shows. Her first film came out in 2007, Nina played the role of Monica in the movie Away From Her.

Nina's character, Mia Jones is first seen in the episode, Can't Hardly Wait, (season 6 episode 4) where she wants to join the Spirit Squad and was instantly accepted based on her excellent movement skills.

In 2007, she began her post secondary studies at Ryerson University in Toronto, where she was majoring in Sociology. Nina also trained at the Dean Armstrong Acting Studio in Toronto, Ontario.

The first episode of the Vampire Diaires airs, and Nina is playing the role of Elena Gilbert, the main female character in the show.

In the season 9 premier of Degrassi, Nina's character Mia is offered a modeling job in Paris, when she moves she is no longer on the show.

2010 was the first year Nina was nominated for an award. She was nominated for Teen Choice TV breakout star -female and Movie breakout star female. She was also nominated Young Hollywood Award for Cast To Watch and Young Hollywood Award for Making their Mark.

Starting in November of 2010 there were rumours and pictures of Nina and Ian Somerhalder (her co star on the vampire diaries). At the time, Nina was 21 and Ian was 31, almost 32.

In 2012, Nina worked alongside actress Emma Watson in the movie "The Perks of Being a Wallflower". She played the role of Candace in the movie based on a best-selling novel.

Sad;y, after three years Nina and Ian confirmed their breakup in early may. They were still friendly with each other two months later at Comic Con San Diego.

Though it was never confirmed, Nina was spotted with her best friend's brother, Derek Hough. If they were together, it didn't last very long because of the distance.

Since Nina only signed a 6 year contract with the Vampire Diaries, season 6 was her last season as Elena (and all her other characters). There is options standing for Nina to return if she wants.
