  • Dame Schools

    Dame Schools
    Schools where families paid a fee for their children to attend. Taught by women with an interest in education.They taught reading, writing, and computation. This is a key event in the history of education because these schools served as the first step in moving education outside of the home and into the communities in which they served.
  • Boston Latin Grammar Schools

    Boston Latin Grammar Schools
    These schools were for boys who came from wealthy families and were similar to prep schools. Boys between the ages of 7 to 14 and paid to attend. These schools marked the beginning of the creation of high schools in America.
  • Thomas Jefferson

    Thomas Jefferson
    Moved that education should be available for all white children and not just the wealthy. He believed that in order for the people to pick their leaders and remain a Democracy, they needed general education. Promoted a more broad approach to education that moved away from religion and focused more on subject matter. Jefferson efforts marked the beginning of what would be the institution of statewide public education.
  • The Common School

    The Common School
    Established by Horace Mann, these schools are the equivalent of our modern day public elementary schools. The Common school was where children of all socioeconomic backgrounds could all receive the same education. These schools were what is considered the beginning of public school that provided free, high quality education.
  • Horace Mann

    Horace Mann
    Reformer and First Secretary of the Board of Education who
    pushed for government to provide free education standardized all aspects of common school. Visited 1,000 schools and found that school materials inadequate, teachers had no training. Mann changed the face of public schools and worked to ensure all public school standards were set and met while demanding that the government provided support. He began what is known as the Common School.
  • Bishop Hughes

    Bishop Hughes
    Moved that the government should provide funds for Catholic children be educated in their own schools. After Hughes became arch bishop he created a national system of catholic schools. This turn of events created a major alternative school system in the U.S. This lends itself to the private schools we still see today with a heavy focus on Catholic values as well as subject matter.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy v. Ferguson
    This Supreme Court case legalized the "separate but equal" treatment of blacks.Unfortunetly, the efforts to provide blacks with equal education were nonexistent. They were not supplied with sufficient materials and left to the wayside of the education system. This set the stage for the climate in the years to follow for the education of blacks in the public school system.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    Supreme Court case that put an end to the "separate but equal" treatment of blacks in the education system.This was accomplished through desegregation and made steps towards racial equality within public schools
