    Mathilde could never afford an luxurious lifestyle. She married a simple clerk however she still wanted more in life.

    Mathilde's husband, Monsieur Loisel, got two invites to a party, she freaked out after he told her because she did not have a dress to wear. She asked her husband for 400 francs to buy a brand new dress. She then borrowed a diamond necklace from Madame Forestier.
  • Climax

    Mathilde attended the party and had a great time. She was complemented on her looks. They left at 4 in the morning. When they were finally home they noticed the necklace Mathilde was wearing was gone.
  • Falling action

    Mathilde told Madame Forestier that she would give back her necklace at a later date and didn't tell her she lost it, instead they found a necklace the same for 36000 francs. Loisel took money he inherited from his father and borrowed money from the bank to buy a replacement.
  • Resolution

    They now had to pay off the debt so Mathilde had to do all the housework while her husband worked more. Ten years later they finally paid the debt. One day when Mathilde was walking she saw Madame Forestier and approached her. She decided to tell her about how she lost the necklace and was in debt for ten years to pay it back. Madame Forestier was shocked to find all this out because the necklace she had given to Mathilde was fake.
