The Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA)
was established on December 5, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama as a grassroots movement to fight for civil rights for African Americans and specifically for the desegregation of the buses in Alabama's capitol city. -
The Women’s Political Council (WPC)
a group of Black women working for civil rights, began circulating flyers calling for a boycott of the bus system on December 5, the day Parks would be tried in municipal court. -
Montgomery Bus Buycott
It ended segregation on this transit system’s service. It almost bankrupted the bus service, as Black people would rather walk than take the bus anywhere because of the discriminatory way of having to give up your seat to White passengers in the “dedicated Colored section” of the bus. -
Southern Christian Leadership Coalition (SCLC)
The SCLC began immediately following the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955 led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Its goal was to spread the spirit of the bus boycott to other parts of the South and lead non-violent protests of segregation. -
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
NAACP, provided the inspiration for the Montgomery Bus Boycott with her 1955 arrest for refusing to give up her seat on the bus to accommodate white passengers
