Nasa's Voyager Missions

  • The Voyager mission was approved

    Building and construction started shortly after for both aircrafts. After both aircrafts were constructed, workers had put in a total of 11,000 workyears in total.
  • Voyager 2 was launched

    Despite being the second aircraft, voyager 2 was launched a little less than a month before its twin aircraft the Voyager 1. The launch took place in the air force station of Cape Canaveral in Florida on a path to Jupiter.
  • Voyager 1 was launched

    Voyager 1 was launched after the Voyager 2 and was launched on a shorter trajectory. The voyager 1 was sent on to Jupiter.
  • Voyager 1 approaches Jupiter

    Voyager 1 had identified multiple volcanoes on Io which is one of Jupiter's largest moons. Jupiter contains 62 moons that have been discovered.
  • Voyager 2 approaches Jupiter

    The deep space network had been expanded due to the increasing distance away from 26 all the way to 70. Another 10 moons were discovered around Uranus
  • Voyager had identified the Supernova 1987A

    A supernova is an explosion within a star that cause it to increase in brightness.
  • Voyager 2 takes first color photographs of Neptune

    It gave scienticts insight on a planet they were not able to observe based on the location of our planet in the solar system.
  • Scientists prove all previous theories of Neptune's atmosphere to be wrong

    We had now discovered a dynamic atmosphere with winds blowing westward opposite the direction of rotation and faster than any winds on other planets.
  • New discoveries of Neptune

    The Great Dark Spot is a storm that was discoverd on Neptune moving east and rotated the planet every 16 hours. Another 6 new moons were discovered as well as dusty rings that were previously unknown.
  • Voyager 2 uses Neptune's gravity to redirect its trajectory

    Vuyager 2 examines Neptune's largest moon Triton as it departs the Solar System below the eliptic plain.
  • Both Voyagers begin the Inerstellar Mission

    This mission consisted of taking pictures and using ultraviolet observations to observe our neighboring solar systems in the Milky Way.
  • Last Voyager Images

    Voyager 1 turns its cameras back to look upon our vast Solar System and takes the parting shot known as the "family portrait."
  • Voyager 1 becomes most distant human made object in space

    It passes the Pioneer 10 as the farthest. Pioneer 10 was a space probe sent to examine Jupiter.
  • Both Voyagers continue to transmit data

    Ultraviolet spectrometers continue to transmit data to scientists on earth, but there is not enough heat to keep the instruments operating.
  • Voyager crosses Termination Shock

    Voyager 2 would pass shortly 3 years later. It passes through on its way to the Helioshphere. Fun Fact: Winds get up to 1,500,000 mph.
  • Both Voyagers are still drifting in Interstellar Space to this day

    Voyager 1 is 94 AU from Earth and is speeding away fromus nearly 1 million miles per day.
