Nancy Cartwright is an American professor of philosophy. Her education and work specializes in philosophy of natural sciences, physics, and methodology of social sciences (Nancy Cartwright – Professor of Philosophy). She is currently a professor at Durham University in England.
-
Cartwright's research primarily regards to physics and economics. She has also worked in, "... modelling, causal inference, causal powers, and objectivity...and the philosophy of social technology" (Professor Nancy Cartwright - Durham University). She has published many books, one of her first and most influential being 'How the Laws of Physics Lie' (1983).

Cartwright challenges many fundamentalist ideas regarding natural science in this book. Despite being regarded as the most significant contributions of modern physics, she argues that some of the basic interpretive theories fail to fully explain the regular occurrences observed in nature. Additionally, she uses many instances of these occurrences to support her ideas.
