I lived in upper Manhattan, and attended a private school on the West side. I was exposed to English at school and Spanish at home. Spanish was spoken less and English was used more.

My middle school years were the last I would have of New York. My parents bought a house in New Milford, New Jersey. The area I lived had no hispanics, My Spanish was becoming more recessive.

During my high school years. Spanish was practiced at school. English was the only language spoken. The use of Spanish was not necessary.

I attended William Paterson College in Wayne, New Jersey. I majored in Elementary Education from Kindergarten to Sixth grade. Those were the best years of my school life. English was still the dominant language,. I took Spanish to improve my reading and writing skillls.

Happy to graduate, but with mixed feelings. Sad leaving those I met behind, but looking forward to new beginnings.

I moved with my first born to Puerto Rico. I was happy , I had taken Spanish classes through high school and college. English was less spoken and Spanish was now the dominant language.

I am glad I kept both languages. English is still my dominant language and I do teach English in all my subjects. Luckily, I held on to my Spanish.
