Maya had just moved to america not long ago, her father and mother won't let her do anything. When she is handed the permision slip she wantrs to through it away because she really wants to go. She just can't give up, that she can't go. So she keeps the permision slip and later it shows back up in the story. She is from Kazakhstan.

The Vice Principal, she thinks she is in trouble because Mr.Walsh only gets people that are in trouble. When she got to the principals office she came to find out that her brother Nurzhan got in a fight. Her brother has been bullied by one kid for a while his name is Ossie Nishozono.

Maya knows that her brother would get in big trouble because he hurt the other kid ossie. So because her father can't speak good english she has to translate from the principal to her father. Instead of saying what the prinicipal really said she kinda lied or told the wrong thing to her father. For example he said (the prinicpal) said "he hurt Ossie pretty bad he has to get two stiches," and she said "the other boy wasn't hurt bad." She lied to protect her brother.

When Maya, her father, and her brother get home of course after her father yelled at them. Maya and ehr brother went inside maya started dinner while Nurzhan did his homework. When he tried to talk to maya all she could do was tell him to do his work. Maya was peeling potatoes for dinner when she was mad at her brother; she started waving a knife around when he got scared thinking his sister was going to hurt him.

Nurzhan comes into Maya's room to deliver the news. She could go to the dance! On one condican, Nurzhan had to chaperone. Yes, her younger brother had to chaperone his big sister. Maya was happy but also mad. Why would her younger brother have to champerone. She is exited though because she could go!!

After Maya's father finds her in the arms of an American boy and yells at her a lot Maya knows that the dance is not an option. Then her brother relizes about the dance. Maya is helping her brother with his spelling that the dance means a lot to Maya. After Maya explains to Nurzhan that the dance is hopeless Nurzhan decides that since she saved him he would do something for her. Maya went in her room so her parents didn't se her. The day of the dance Maya was so exited but nervous that her parents would change there minds. When her mother called her into the kithcen she was really nervous. But then she saw a green present on the tale. Her mother told her to open it and then Maya discovered a gold braclet. "My mother gave me this when i was 16, thats thats the age you hade to be to go to your first dance. But i guess the rules are different here." Maya's mother said. Maya was overjoyed that her mother gave it to her.

Maya (after school) arrived to the gym for the dance. She see's the American boy that her dad found her in the arms of. Daniel (the american boy) andmaya hung out the whole dance. Even slow danced! But as for her brother he just sat on the blechers the whole time.
