  • Lisbon Earthquake

    Lisbon Earthquake
    Also known as the "Disaster of Lisbon", this earthquake had a magnitude of 8.5-9.0. It occurred on All Saints Day. The tsunami that came along with it killed about 70,000 people. It was ruled as one of the most destructive earthquakes in history.
  • Krakatoa Eruption

    Krakatoa Eruption
    At least 36,417 people where killed by the giant waves as a result of the eruption. The waves where 120 ft high. The volcanic explositivity index was rated at a 6 which is colossal.
  • Aleutian Earthquake

    Aleutian Earthquake
    The magnitude of this quake was at 7.4. Following the earthquake a tsunami arrived 45 minutes later. The tsunami was 100 ft tall and struck hard killing 159 people.
  • Great Chilean Earthquake

    Great Chilean Earthquake
    This was the largest magnitude earthquake ever recorded at 9.4-9.6. 80 ft tsunamis killed around 16,000 people. The waves where so large that they hit Hawaii even though Hawaii was 6.200 miles away.
  • Good Friday Earthquake

    Good Friday Earthquake
    Recorded at a magnitude of 9.2. This tsunami following the earthquake killed about 106 people in Alaska. It hit one town in particular and killed 23 of the 68 people living there.
  • Hokkaido Earthquake (Japan)

    Hokkaido Earthquake (Japan)
    The quake consisted of a 7.7 magnitude. Then triggered a major tsunami killing 230 people. It later caused a landslide which was responsible for killing many others.
  • Papua New Guinea Quake

    Papua New Guinea Quake
    The magnitude was recorded at 7.1 with a major aftershock following less than an hour later. The tsunami killed thousands.
  • Sumatra Earthquake

    Sumatra Earthquake
    A very powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 9.2. It caused a very large tsunami which killed 227,000 people. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters of the 21st century.
  • Samoa Earthquake

    Samoa Earthquake
    This earthquake was recorded of 8.0 magnitude. It created a large tsunami which killed 3,000 people. This earthquake was different though because it was called an outer rise quake. This was something we have never seen and is very rare.
  • Chile Earthquake

    Chile Earthquake
    The Chile earthquake was recorded of 8.8 magnitude, and struck at 3:34 am. The epicenter was 200 miles away from the capital of Chile. The tsunami killed 150 people.
  • Tohoku Earthquake

    Tohoku Earthquake
    The most recently significant earthquake. It had large magnitude of 9.1 and caused a tsunami that killed 570 people. It was an under sea mega thrust earthquake.
