These two enslaved people sued for freedom when Quock was promised emancipation from his former slaveholder but wasn't given it. Mum Bett sued for freedom before and her case was used as a model for Quock case when the Massachusetts Supreme Court deemed slavery contradicted the Consitution. -

The capital is moved to Washington city
Jefferson’s plan, accepted by Washington and Hamilton, situated the capital between Virginia and Maryland, an area where more than 300,000 enslaved workers lived. To construct the capital, between 1792 and 1809, the government hired hundreds of enslaved men and a few women, paying slaveholders $5 per month for each individual’s labor.
