  • Benjamin Mays takes over as president of Morehouse

    Benjamin Mays takes over as president of Morehouse
    Benjamin Mays was able to take Morehouse and make it into a distinguished school. Morehouse was a extremely poor school that had not had trustworthy leadership since John Hope in the early 1900s.

    Eugene Talmadge was sick during his 4th run for Govener. Some of his supporters feared that he would die before taking office, therefore they placed his son's name, Herman Talmadge, for the run for Govener. When Eugene passed away they came forth and said that Herman Talmadge has actually won the election due to the county unit system making votes in smaller counties easier to get. This created the 3 Govener's Controvesy between Herman Talmadge, Melvin Thompson, and Ellis Arnall.

    Martin Luther King Jr.'s Career

    Martin Luther King's first major event in his career for the civil rights of African Americans began in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955. King soon became the voice for the movement of civil rights. His most famous speech, I Have a Dream, was said at the March on Washington. However, he was unpopular among white supremisists and was assassinated on April 4, 1968.
  • 1956 State Flag Controvesy

    In 1956 Georgia's government had the Confederate cross implemented onto the state flag. Needless to say this caused alot of controversy
  • Sibley Commision

    In 1960, the Governer of Georgia created a group called the Sibley Commision. The Sibley Commision asked many rural homes in Georgia about their opinion for integrated schools. What they found was the majority of Georgia would rather close schools than have them integrated.

    The SNCC played a major role in the Civil Rights movement. The SNCC hosted many sit-ins and took part in many key events during the time period.
  • First black students allowed to UGA

    Hamilton Holmes and Charlatne Hunter were the first African American students admitted to the school off UGA.
  • Albany Movement

    The Albany Movement was a movement to challenge the segregation policies of Georgia. The movement was a failure, but it helped the activists learn how to protest.
  • Lester Maddox threatens black civil right's activist

    Lester and a group of men threaten African Americans with axe handles. Lester was a former governer of Georgia, and he was strongly against Civil Rights.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    A bill was passed that outlawed discrimination based on race, religion, sex, or color. This was a major step for Civil Rights.
  • Andrew Young is elected to Congress

    Andrew Young becomes the first African American elected into Congress since Reconstruction.
  • Maynard Jackson is elected mayot

    Maynard Jackson is the first African American elected as the mayor for a major southern city. He was mayor of Atlanta.
