Benjamin May's Life
He was a lifelong educator and President of Morehouse College. He mentored Martin Luther King, JR while he was at Morehouse. He was the first African American school board president in Atlanta. He was a civil rights activist.

1946 Governor’s Race/End of the White Primary
Eugene Talmadge was elected in November of 1946, but he died the next mounth. No one knew what to do if the governor dies so there was a race for Herman Talmadge, Ellis Arnall, and M. E. Thompson. Herman Talmadge thought he should be governor because he had received write-in votes during the ’46 election. M. E. Thompson was elected Lieutenant Governor he felt the office of governor fell to him. Ellis Arnall was the last governor. Talmadge became the next governor.

Brown v. Board of Education
Brown v. Board was a class action lawsuit. The court case ruled that seperate pulic schools for whites and blacks was unconstitutional. 1956 State Flag
The 1956 georgia flag was a symbol of Georgia. The flag changed to incorporate Confederate Battle Flag. The flag became a controversy between white and black citizens.The State flag was used from 1956 to 2001. Created as a protest to the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling. The flag was opposed by African Americans & Progressives. -
Sibley commission
John Sibley was the governor at the time. Van diver wanted to know what GA's citizens thought about desegregating schools. 60% of georgians would rather shut down the public schools than do the federally mandated integration. Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter to UGA
They both applied for University of Georgia and were qualified but they were both denied because of there race. There case went to federal court. UGA was a segregated all white school; Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter were the first two African American students admitted to the University of Georgia. They were members of the NAACP and hlped to challenge UGA to desegregate their campus.

Andrew Young
He was a civil rights activist. He assisted MLK during the Civil Rights Movement. He was the director of the SCLC. He was a U.N. Ambassador for Carter. He was the first African American from GA to be elected to the Congress since the 1860's. He helped desegregate America. -
Albany Movement
The Albany Movement was a desegregation coalition formed by SNCC and NAACP. This movement was a fail because all of the protesters got arrested but there was noone left to protest outside of the jail. They learned alot from this fail though. The movement began in Albany, GA. March on Wahington
The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. March on washington was one of the largest political rallies fro human rights in history. They demanded civil and economic rights for African Americans. MLK said his "I have a dream" speech.

Civil Rights Act
The Civil Rights Act outlawed discrimination based on race, gender, religion, color, national origin. New civil rights laws created by John F. Kennedy and approved by Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson. The laws required all public facilities to be integrated and prohibited discrimination in business and labor unions. -

Lester Maddox term as governor
Lester Massox was brought to office because of widespread dissatisfaction with segregation. He appointed more African Americans to government positions than all previous Georgia governors combined. Maynard Jackson as Mayor of Atlanta
He was the fist African-American person to be the mayor in a major southern city. He went to Morehouse Colledge. He increased programs for the arts. He expanded the airport.
