    Eugene Talmadge died in late December after being elected for governer to take office in 1947. This left the position open for 3 people to take office; Herman Talmadge, Ellis Arnall, and Melvin Thompson.

    Brown vs. Board of EducationBrown vs. Board of Education was a Supreme Court case that declared that having separate schools for black and white students was unconstitutional. This ruling overturned the verdict of Plessy vs. Ferguson. The Supreme Court's desicion was unanimous (9-0).

    From 1956- 2001 the Georgia flag was majorly a confederate battle flag. Some people in the state found it offensive, however the flag was made in a time where the Georgia General Assembly "...was entirely devoted to passing legislation that would preserve segregation and white supremacy..." the flag was changed in 2001 when people began to think that the flag was offensive and needed to be changed.

    The SNCC was started at a student meeting organized by Ella Baker held at Shaw University. They played a major role in sit-ins and freedom rides. They also played a large role in The March on Washington.
  • Sibley Commision

    UGA IntegrationThe governer of Georgia had to decide whether to close public schools or desegregate them. The Sibley Commision was created to let the citizens of Georgia vote, John Sibley led the commision. Sixty percent of citizens from Georgia favored total segregation of of schools. However before the legislature could act on this, a federal judge ordered that 2 black students were to be admitted to UGA. Wanting to avoid conflict with the federal government they desegregated the public schools.

    In 1961 black students Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter were admitted to UGA to achieve racial intergration after the tension with the Southern Assosiation of Colleges and Schools.

In front of the Lincon Memorial Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, also his mentor Dr. Benjamin Mays gave the benediction at the end of the rally.

    Andrew Young was elected as Mayor of Atlanta in 1981. While he was mayor he helped boost Atlanta's economy by adding tourist sites and expanding on transportation and education. In 1990 he ran for Governer of Georgia.
